SLBC’s 3 part guide to exploring Strangford Lough – Part 3

In the second part of our tour of Strangford Lough we visited the villages of Strangford, Killyleagh, Saintfield and Comber. We will now take you on the final part of the journey to the towns of Comber, Newtownards, Portaferry and other local picturesque villages.

From the town of Comber follow the dual carriageway to Newtownards. This town is steeped in history from as far back as 545 AD and lies at the northern tip of Strangford Lough. The town is overlooked by Scrabo Tower. The tower is 100 foot high and was built as a memorial to Charles Stewart, in recognition of his concern for his tenants during the potato famine. The tower stands in Scrabo Country Park and there are many beautiful walks around the wood and parkland. If you follow the signs up to the car park of the tower you can take advantage of the panoramic views and get some fabulous photographs on a clear day.

When in Newtownards set aside some time to visit the Somme Heritage Centre, Ark Open Farm and the beautiful National Trust property Mount Stewart. The town also has some beautiful unique shops and cafes, as well as a shopping centre, only a short walk from the town centre, which boasts many of the popular high street stores. Should you wish to watch a film, the family run Movieland cinema is located in the shopping centre complex and features all the latest releases.

If you have a few more days to explore take a trip around the shoreline of the Lough. You will visit the towns of Greyabbey and Kircubbin, and if you have time visit the National Trust property Mount Stewart. The last town you will come across will be Portaferry. Be sure to visit the beautiful Marina and the Exploris aquarium which is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon with something to do for all the family.

The extensive aquarium is an experience for both adults and kids and is well worth a visit. It also houses a popular small petting aquarium with a selection of stingrays and friendly fish to brighten up anyone’s day with a landscaped picnic garden to the rear of the aquarium in which to relax with a cup of coffee. While in the area, take a look at Portaferry Castle. The tower house overlooks the harbour and was built in the 16th Century by William Le Savage.

The small town is a perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon browsing the small specialist shops for special and unique gifts. After your perusal through the little town, we recommend a stop at the Portaferry Hotel, located on the strand, for a spot of food and a Strangford Lough Brewing Company beer. The hotel’s award winning restaurant uses the best of local produce including beef, lamb and game from neighbouring estates and the capable bar staff will be able to recommend a SLBC beer to compliment your meal.

To finish your tour of Strangford Lough in style take the ferry from Portaferry to Strangford. The ferry, which taxi’s passengers and cars across the Lough, operates daily at 15-minute intervals between the villages. Although the journey is short the views of the lough are stunning and provide visitors to the area with fabulous photographs on days where the weather is fine.

During your visit, take time to enjoy the views, the history and of course the famous hospitality associated with our corner of County Down. Spend a few nights and experience the unique and stunning sights the area has on offer. The towns surrounding Strangford Lough have many places to shop, eat, drink and relax. You will not be disappointed! Visit www.killyleagh.org for a list of places to stay during your visit or for further information on the area.
